About the project
The four Black Country local authorities of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton have come together to review their current lists and update them with new sites as part of the Black Country Local List project. They have commissioned local consultants, TDR Heritage to carry out this work on their behalf. The work involves reviewing the existing Local Heritage Lists across the Black Country and assessing nominations for new sites that could be added to the list, against agreed criteria.
The Black Country Local Heritage List project is being funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities as part of their £1.5m Local Heritage List Campaign. The campaign encourages communities to nominate historic buildings and other heritage assets which they value most for inclusion in their Council’s Local Heritage List, helping to protect them through the planning system.
We are working with a range of communities to encourage nominations, including groups with a specialist interest in the historic environment such as national and local amenity societies, as well as local clubs and heritage societies.
Project timeline
- Nominations for adding new sites to the list closed on 14th February 2022.
- The nominations are now being assessed by our specialist team against the draft criteria and we will make recommendations about which sites should be included on an updated Black Country Local Heritage List or added to the local Historic Environment Record.
- Following these assessments the Black Country Local Authorities will consider our recommendations and carry out a public consultation on which sites should be added to the Black Country Local Heritage List, before publishing it.
Nominating sites after 14th February 2022
Although nominations for sites to be included in this round of assessment needed to be submitted before 14th February 2022, you can still nominate sites for inclusion on the Black Country Local Heritage Lists by contacting Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall or Wolverhampton City Councils directly.
